Home to the largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh paintings and drawings in the world, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is truly a treasure of the arts. This museum features a plethora of Van Gogh paintings as well as those of his contemporaries. It also holds extensive exhibitions on various subjects from 19th century art history. The museum consists of two buildings, the main building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973; as well as the Exhibition Wind, designed by Kisho Kurokawa and completed in 1999. The museum’s read faces the Museumplein (Museum Square) which gives visitors a large open expanse in the city where people can meet, stroll and relax. The square is extremely popular with museum visitors, school kids and people on their lunch breaks, especially in the summertime.
The museum’s permanent collection chronicles the various parts of Van Gogh’s life from childhood through his death with over 200 paintings. The museum helps teach you about Van Gogh with a variety of media and channels. There are even audio guided tours in 9 languages including Mandarin. The information desk provides a variety of literature available in 8 different languages that tells the story of Van Gogh’s life. It is very useful to follow along with the different pamphlets while touring the first floor and watching the chronological presentation of Van Gogh’s work. The museum’s auditorium is the home to regularly scheduled activities, playing host to many lectures and films that are available free of charge to visitors. Every first Sunday of the month at 2pm the auditorium hosts a free fascinating presentation discussing the latest research into the collection or a current exhibit.
The Van Gogh Museum is open daily from 10am-6pm except on Fridays when it is open from 10am-10pm. The ticket office closes 30 minutes prior to closing; so don’t be late. Children 0-17, Members of ICOM and I Amsterdam card holders are admitted free; Adult admission to the museum is € 14 (or € 7 for Stadspas card holders). Don’t forget to pay a visit to the museum shop, it offers dozens of publications with background information about Van Gogh and other 19th century artists. The museum café is nice for a simple lunch serving you a range of snacks and beverages allowing you to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the exceptional view of the Museumplein and the titanium façade of the exhibition wing. The Van Gogh Museum is a cultural phenomenon that is matchless in its ability to amaze and astound the countless visitors that walk its halls year after year.
