The Greenbrier :: West Virginia

In 1778 American pioneers first came to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to “take the cure” as prescribed by Native Americans. The natural sulfur springs there were thought to have curative powers and began to attract visitors far and wide. Started as a cluster of cabins around the spring a hotel emerged in 1858 calling itself the Grand Central. That building was later razed and out of the ashes was born the classic and stately Greenbrier Hotel. Housed on 6,500 acres of gorgeous territory in the Allegheny Mountains the Greenbrier has seen nearly every president since 1922 pass its threshold. In fact, there’s even an enormous underground Cold War bunker built during the Eisenhower administration that was meant as an emergency fallout shelter for Congress. With over 600 rooms, the Greenbrier Hotel is a grand and expansive retreat for the adventurous and the elite.
While the hotel is beautiful, there is no shortage of activities to keep you occupied. Try falconry or sleigh rides, maybe a game of pool or some horseback riding, there’s even whitewater rafting and tennis; there’s one phrase that will never leave your lips at the Greenbrier and that is, “I’m bored.” They offer nearly 50 exciting, laid back, relaxing, and stimulating things to do during your stay. By far the most popular diversion is their three 18 hole golf courses. The famous Greenbrier Golf Academy will be happy to school you on their grounds that have been voted among the top links in the world. If you’re feeling a bit worn out after a tough day on the greens, book a treatment or two (or three) in the 30,000 square foot spa. Relax and rewind in the healing waters that drew the first tourists here over two centuries ago. Specialty youth treatments, facials, massage, hydrotherapy, and more are there at your fingertips.
With so much to do and see, take a few moments to absorb the colonial beauty of the hotel itself. The Greenbrier is definitely not a shorts and sandals resort. Massive chandeliers hover below the vaulted ceilings and sleek marble flooring; glowing elegantly in the bright clean Post-war décor. From the deluxe to the Presidential Suite, Greenbrier does not disappoint. Spend a late night in the casino or grab a bite at one of their nine restaurants. Classy and classic, the Greenbrier can’t help but impress. Luxurious enough for a romantic getaway but still charming and simple enough for a fantastic business conference, the Greenbrier Hotel is the ultimate in high class lodging. Stay for a night or for the rest of your life (yep, they have real estate options), the Greenbrier is calling you home.
