The Danish are an amazing race of people and to add to their list of achievements the land of Hans Christian Andersen has brought you Bakken for the last 427 years. That is over four centuries of unrivaled fun at Bakken Amusement Park in Copenhagen. Dyrehavsbakken, or Bakken to the locals, has been in operation since 1583.
The original concept for an amusement park came about from fairs and traveling shows. The Danes wanted more and so they created a permanent amusement park area for their people to enjoy at their own leisure!
This park though had its origins from another source; its water. The water found in this area is rich in minerals and in earlier days was thought to have curative powers. Every summer people would flock to the area for cures to their ailments. The large crowds drew many other types of people: tradesmen, tinkers and entertainers were among those that came to ply their trades. It is rumored that the first shooting gallery started here as well. The local potters would let their irregular bowls be used target practice and small gifts would be awarded to winners of these contests.
Bakken Amusement Park started to become more renown and as it did Danish Royalty became involved and in a rather large and accomplished way. In 1669 King Frederik III started a zoo here and his son Christian V brought in acrobats and other forms of entertainment and increased the parks boundaries fivefold.
It was here at Bakken Amusement Park that the first Freak Shows took place where myriad types of deformities both animal and human were exhibited. They also lay claim to the first Chorus Line and the very first Cabaret! Today the park boasts not only the oldest but some of the most modern rides at any amusement park. The people of the park called “tent owners” have been involved in helping people experience the finest in hospitality and local culture that the Danish people can give. These people have dedicated themselves to giving visitors the very best that Copenhagen has to offer. From the setting to the cuisine everything is perfect. The “tent owners” only add to the finest fun time one could imagine, poolside or table side, while dancing or dining the atmosphere is made more pleasant by their presence. Oh! And as a huge bonus, the admission is always FREE!
