Built out of salt blocks, the amazing Palacio de Sal (Palace of Salt to us English folks) is located at the edge of the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. The Salar de Uyuni has long been a popular tourist attraction for travelers around the world. Due to the scarcity of construction materials in the area the hotel was created out of the one material that is plentiful in area. The first Palacio de Sal was built between 1993 and 1995 and soon became a popular tourist destination featuring 12 double rooms, a common bath and no shower. Due to its original location in the center of a desert there were various sanitary and environmental issues that cause the hotel to be dismantled in 2002.
